First United Methodist Church is a Christ-centered community of believers who are committed not only to hearing but doing the Word of God (James 1:22). We gather for worship on Sunday mornings in a traditional setting, enriched with the sounds of pipe organ, piano, choirs and vocalists. The acoustics of our domed ceiling contribute to the glorious sounds we offer to God in praise and thanksgiving. From here, we are sent out into the community and the world to share in word and deed the Good News of Jesus Christ wherever we are.
At various times through the week, there are study and fellowship groups available to enrich and grow participants in faith—whether you have just started in your journey with God, or you are a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. You'll find the schedule and a description of these activities on our news and events page.
If you are a first time visitor to the church, please take a moment to learn more about us and what to expect when you visit.
What Kind of Church is This?
That is a question that most of us ask as we consider whether or not to join ourselves to a congregation. Every congregation has a unique mix of strengths and weaknesses. No one congregation can be everything to everyone.
Here at Plymouth First United Methodist Church, we are a welcoming and joyful congregation that believes when our hearts and minds are open, God can bless us with new truths, new opportunities to serve, and new friendships. Our experience has shown us that God uses our worship life, study life, serving life, and fellowship life to grow our faith and transform our lives. We are a congregation called to:
- Reach a variety of generations with worship that proclaims the eternal Good News of Jesus Christ in a way that is clear and compelling;
- Provide a network of small groups and Bible study opportunities where seekers can become believers and believers can become servant followers of Christ;
- Respond to the Holy Spirit by equipping the people of God for the ministry of sharing the gospel, feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger and visiting the lonely. At First United Methodist our desire is that everyone be in ministry!
As imperfect as we all are, we believe you will find joy, grace, encouragement, challenging truth and the living God in us and between us. Welcome to Plymouth First United Methodist Church!
What We Believe
Plymouth First United Methodist Church is a part of a world-wide movement whose mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. (To see more about the United Methodist Church, please see umc.org) Our vision is to Love God, Love Others and Serve Others.
We believe that God's love truly can and does transform. We believe God is alive, and that God's son Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world who transforms us from our old ways into a new life. We believe in love, in the forgiveness of sins, in grace and redemption. We believe God is at work in everyone, and we do not have to be perfect to have a relationship with Christ – only open to God's love, presence and leading. We believe that the Holy Spirit is active today, filling us and revealing God's love and grace.
We believe there is strength in diversity and that we are blessed to work with others in this community and around the world to make a difference in people's lives.
As United Methodists, we seek to live out the historic faith that God has come to the world in the person of Jesus Christ, and in him we come face-to-face with the grace, truth, and fullness of the living God. United Methodists are called to be generous in spirit, open to new truth and eager to love all people. The life and ministries of the church are intended to help us grow to be passionately devoted to Jesus Christ, and wholly surrendered to God. We strive for personal holiness by inviting people into a life-transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. We also pursue social holiness in our public life by addressing key issues of our time so that our world will look more like the world God created it to be. We believe the goal of the Christian life is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We value passionate worship, relevant preaching, study of the Word, small groups to hold Christians accountable to one another, and serving those who are in need.
We believe the Bible is the living Word of God, inspired by God and enlivened through the Holy Spirit. The Bible guides us in knowing who God is and how we can live in a relationship with Jesus and with one another.
We believe the Church is a group of people on a mission filled with the love of God. The Church is not just a building or place—but we are called to be the light and love of Jesus in a living, serving community.
